Trys dienos
(Three Days)
Dir. Šarūnas Bartas 1991 76 min. [c] Kinema
An early masterpiece of our famous avant-garde artist Šarūnas Bartas. Three days spent in the land of vanishing culture, Königsberg, in search of close people and losing the ones who pretended close before. Images of moments that are impossible to be grasped without the close look of the director. Grimaces of every day that we shall see no more. Faces that we shall meet no more. But those who watch Bartas films, need no words any more.

Nieko nepraranda vaikai
(Children Lose Nothing)
Dir. Šarūnas Bartas 2004 05 min. [c] Kinema
Here is a cinematic novella made for the project Visions of Europe coordinated by Lithuanian Lars von Trier. The film speaks (or keeps silent) about the childs efforts to sail a paper vessel into the sea for myriads of times, about the spring coming for the myriads of times, etc. Who awaits you on the other shore? Anything new? Or something long forgotten? Sounds from Donis Švilpiai album glimpse in the soundtrack of this five-minute story. |

The Wicker Man
Dir. Robin Hardy 1973 99 min. in English
A quite unique and very creative mystery horror. Superb acting from Edward Woodward as the prim Sergeant Howie, and Christopher Lee as Lord Summerisle. Fascinating from start to finish and a real twister of a plot that keeps you hooked right until the final twenty minutes. What appears at first sight to be an innocent search for a missing girl turns into a fascinating exploration of pagan rituals on a remote and sex obsessed Scottish island. One of the best elements of the film is the classic early 70's folk soundtrack, which gives indication of how the era in which this was filmed influenced the subject matter. A quality piece of cinema! Film fans even go to the isle to see the site of filming and perhaps in search of the old cult.

Kin Dza Dza
Dir. Georgiy Daneliya - 1986 135 min. in Russian (English subt.)
A cult film from a Georgian director, entertaining cyber-punk classics that has caused a real commotion in Soviet times. Russian engineer Vladimir and Georgian fellow Gedevan, student of Textile Institute, find themselves in the planet of Pluk through a silly misunderstanding. There they meet creatures resembling humans and wild society full of charming features. How close is this milieu to our own future setting? Will the characters find their way back to Earth? Remarkable style and original idea make us see our world from a bit different angle.

The Return
Dir. Andrei Zvyagintsev - 2003 - 105 min. in Russian
The first full-feature film from a 38-year-old director shines with Tarkovsky-like aura and picturesque views. The Return tells the story of two brothers. After the return of never-seen father, the quiet life of the brothers in a small riverside town suddenly turns over. They set out for fishing together and start knowing each other. Immediately after its release, the film was called the most public-unfriendly in Russia. However, later in Russia, Venice, Berlin and other countries it was awarded as the best. For the director, the man is a mystery, a riddle. So the public should not expect the film to reveal all its secrets. As a side note, Vladimir Garin who acted as the son Andrey, in 2003 drowned in the same lake where the film was made. Why does everything related to Russia end so tragically?..
